The USS Greeneville, the fast-attack nuclear submarine named for this community, achieved a significant milestone on Feb. 21 by completing its 500th dive.

Commander A.C. Carullo, the sub's commanding officer, said in a March 11 letter forwarded to "Citizens of Greeneville and Greene County," that "This is a significant milestone in a submarine's lifetime, and Greeneville achieved this with all of the pride and professionalism that you would expect from your submarine and your crew."

He continued, "We completed this event on Sunday, Feb. 21.

"It was another beautiful day in the Hawaiian Operating Areas as we surfaced the ship for the 499th time. With excitement and pride running throughout our ship, the 'Volunteers' submerged Greeneville for the 500th time at 4 p.m. local time and proceeded to a depth of 772 feet!"

The depth corresponds to the Greeneville's hull number: SSN 772.

"Our crew remains both energized and enthusiastic as we prepare for our Fall 2010 Western Pacific Deployment.

"Our friends in Greeneville and Greene County, Tennessee, will always be with us and we look forward to making you proud," Carullo wrote.

The letter concludes, "I wish you all a most sincere thanks for your love and support throughout the years. It has been the foundation upon which Greeneville has flourished throughout her service to the Navy and our nation. Aloha!"
