Chuckey-Doak swept both ends of a cross-county doubleheader against rival South Greene on Saturday night, and it was hard to tell which win excited the black and gold half of the capacity crowd more.

Brooke White hit a 3-pointer with about four seconds left to give the Lady Knights a 58-55 home victory, a win they earned by fighting back from 16 down in the first half.

Chuckey-Doak's boys had to survive a big fourth quarter by the Rebs and did enough to hold on for a 48-46 win to complete the sweep.

The two Blue Ridge Athletic Conference rivals won't have to wait long for a rematch. They meet again this Friday at South Greene.

Before that, Chuckey-Doak has a league game on Tuesday at Claiborne.

WHITE BASKET THE DIFFERENCE

White made only three baskets the entire night, but her final one made the difference in the game.

After trailing the entire first half and taking the lead in the third quarter, the Lady Knights had a fight on their hands down the stretch. The score was tied or the lead changed hands nearly 10 times.

When Rechelle Dye scored for South Greene to tie the game with only seconds remaining, it looked like it was headed for overtime.

Chuckey-Doak didn't panic. The Lady Knights got the ball up the floor and got it over to White on the left wing where she drained the important long range jumper as if it were no different than any other, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

The Lady Rebels opened the game in a frenzied pace, using an 8-0 run to spark a big opening eight minutes that had South Greene on top 23-10. Ansley Ricker bookended the quarter for the Lady Rebs, hitting a 3-pointer to start the game then hitting another at the buzzer to give the visitors a 13-point cushion.

South Greene upped its lead to 16 at the start of the second, but then Chuckey-Doak flipped a switch.

Hannah Riddle, Karly Frye and Christian Ward each scored five in the second to ignite a 20-point period that trimmed South Greene's lead to 35-30 by halftime.

The Lady Knights took their first lead of the game at 40-39 on a 3-pointer by White in the third, and they were up 44-42 at the end of the third when a 3-pointer by South Greene rimmed out at the horn.

It was a frantic fourth quarter with the lead changing hands or the score being tied on almost every basket. Shelby Hicks scored six to lead the Lady Rebs, and Ward had another five-point quarter for the Lady Knights.

It was tied at 53 with a minute to go, then Ashlyn Taylor put the Lady Knights up on a putback with :32 remaining. Dye scored her only two points of the second half to tie the game and make overtime look likely, but White stepped up and won it for Chuckey-Doak.

Chuckey-Doak made 18 field goals in the game. Seven of them were 3-pointers. White hit three and had 13. Ward also hit three, scoring 13. Frye had one and scored a team-best 16.

Ricker led South Greene with 17 points. Dye scored 15. Hicks scored 13 and blocked four shots.

KNIGHTS SURVIVE

After leading the entire way, Chuckey-Doak had to survive a strong fourth quarter and a host of missed chances by the Rebels at the end.

The Black Knights were consistent for the first three quarters, and it paid off.

Chuckey-Doak led 10-7 at the close of the first and led by double figures early in the second. The Rebels struggled shooting, missing the first 10 shots they took in the second, not scoring until Kolin Donhue checked in and scored back-to-back baskets.

Jameson Painter scored five in the second and had eight in the first half to help give the Knights a 25-16 lead at halftime.

Scott Blake sparked a second half comeback bid by the Rebels. He hit three of his five 3-pointers in the third, scoring 12 of his game-best 22 points, helping the Rebs to a 16-point period to match their total for the entire first half.

Preston Moore scored eight off two 3-pointers for the Black Knights, keeping Chuckey-Doak out front 40-32 heading into the fourth.

South Greene continued its comeback bid in the fourth, and trailed by two on a late basket from T.E. Myers. The Knights managed to do just enough to hold on for the win.

Moore led the Knights with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Clint Sexton scored 13, including a key basket in the fourth to help secure the win.
