It was a night on which the Chuckey-Doak girls were taken to the limit by West Greene and then some. But there was eventual survival for the Lady Knights in an overtime thriller.
Christian Ward dropped in the decisive free throw with a mere 0.2 left to lift C-D to a 62-61 win in Blue Ridge Athletic Conference play. The visitors forced the extra period on a Karly Frye 3-pointer with just 5.5 seconds left in regulation. Frye poured in 31 points for the winners.
Victoria Franklin was a workhouse for the Lady Buffaloes with a career-high 26 points as part of a double-double. Franklin ripped down 16 rebounds, also a career best.
The Chuckey-Doak ladies improve to 14-8 and 6-2 for the season. The Lady Buffs, who led virtually throughout, fall to a tough-luck 4-17 and 0-10.
The C-D boys then held a solid lead from start-to-finish in completing the varsity sweep, 82-61.
The Black Knights move to 8-9 and 4-4. The Buffaloes dip to 4-17 and 1-9.
Basketball homecoming activities preceded the varsity games. Chelsey Carter was crowned homecoming queen. Savannah Favret was named first runner-up and Whitney Douthat second runner-up.
A ceremony was also held dedicating the West Greene Fieldhouse with the facility named for long-time supporter Eugene "Doc" Harrison.
Chuckey-Doak returns to action tonight with a home game against South Greene. West Greene has home make-up contests set for Monday against Claiborne.
LADY KNIGHTS TAKE THRILLER
The Chuckey-Doak girls never led by more than two points before pulling out an important conference victory over a fired-up West Greene squad, which just fell short of its first conference win.
The Lady Buffs, with the hard-working Franklin firing in seven first-quarter points, jumped out to a strong start and never let up. The Lady Knights were slowed in the first half by the absence of Tiffany Bowman, who departed for the bench in the second period due to three personal fouls.
Chuckey-Doak's largest lead in regulation was a single point but the margin never grew to double figures with the Lady Knights staying within striking distance.
WG held its biggest lead, a 50-42 spread with 2:20 remaining in the fourth, and continued to hold on in the final seconds, thanks to four straight free throws by Macey Haire. But Frye, who poured in 16 points after the third period, continually made plays down the stretch before firing home the game-tying trey after an offensive rebound in the final ticks.
With WG point guard Korey Mathes sidelined by a late injury, the Lady Knights managed to create enough opportunities with their pressure defense to stay close and eventually pull out the win.
Hannah Riddle was also an important cog in the C-D winning effort, with nine points and seven rebounds. Mathes contributed 12 points, which included a trio of 3-pointers for WG.
