The Greeneville Sun is warning its readers and advertisers to
not give out personal information or credit card numbers over the telephone to persons claiming to
work for the newspaper.
The Greeneville Sun does NOT contact its readers or advertisers over
the phone to ask for credit card information or personal identification of any kind, said Artie
Wehenkel, advertising director of the Sun.
The Sun has learned of a telephone scam from
another Jones Media newspaper, The News Herald in Lenoir City.
Upon further investigation,
the Sun learned that several calls have been received at the newspaper from concerned readers
wanting to verify that the Sun had indeed contacted them and requested information.
This
telephone scam is not limited to readers of the Sun and we again caution our readers and advertisers
to be vigilant and protective of their personal financial information.
Anyone who has
advertised in the Greeneville Sun and has given credit card information, or other personal
information, to a person over the telephone should contact his or her bank immediately.
For
more information, please call Wehenkel at 423-359-3160.
