South Greene's girls and boys along with the North Greene boys were winners Tuesday in the opening round of the Greene County Thanksgiving Classic, but the North Greene girls stumbled in their game against Morristown East.
The Lady Rebels routed University High, the South Greene boys beat Providence Academy, and the North Greene boys rolled over King's Academy in opening games.
Chuckey-Doak and West Greene are involved in the tournament today, which is being staged this year at South Greene's gym. Chuckey-Doak's girls and boys are taking on Hampton in games which began at 10 a.m. The West Greene girls play Cherokee this afternoon while the West Greene boys battle Pigeon Forge.
There will be no games Thursday, but action will continue Friday morning at 10 a.m. with four loser's bracket games, followed by the four semifinals in the late afternoon and evening. Games will be held again all day Saturday, leading up to the championship tilts in both girls and boys that evening.
LADY HUSKIES STUMBLE
North Greene's girls got off to a bad start and trailed by 15 points at halftime. They made a run in the third but couldn't overcome the big deficit and eventually lost by a 67-50 margin to the Morristown East Lady Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes used their great height advantage to make up for a huge number of turnovers that the Huskies couldn't capitalize on due to poor shooting and floor errors of their own.
Down 36-21 at halftime, the Huskies made a rally to get the deficit down to 43-35 in the third stanza, but could get no closer.
Kayla Orrick had 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead East High (2-0), while Sam Hale also hit for 13. Sophomore Haley Vaughan was high point producer for the Huskies (2-1) with 16 points, while Mariah Britton scored 13 and Dakota White added 11.

Trailing throughout the first half and down by three points at intermission, the North Greene boys stormed back in the second half and posted a 57-44 win over the King's Academy Lions.
The difference was the defense applied to King's athletic 6-7 post Cyville Sandjon. Sandjon scored 13 points in the first half, but was held to only two more field goals the rest of the way as the North Greene boys improved to 3-0 on the year.
The guard combination of Dylan Payne and Drew Lady accounted for 40 of the Huskies' points, with Payne scoring 25 and Lady 15. Lady got all of his points in the second half.
