Greeneville Federal Bank has made a $5,000 donation in support of the Volunteer Center's fourth annual Youth Summit, which will be held here on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

Mary Fitzpatrick, who heads the local Volunteer Center, said that on Jan. 20 eighth-graders from local schools will attend a morning program.

Brandon Hull, president of Greeenville Federal Bank, said, "We are pleased to sponsor this event and give every eighth-grader in both Greeneville and Greene County school systems this opportunity."

Colin Powell, the founding chairman of America's Promise, issued a challenge to communities across the country to work on that organization's "Five Promises," which are a focus on the Youth Summit.

Those Five Promises are to provide for young people:

* "ongoing relationships with caring adults -- parents, mentors, tutors or coaches;

* "safe places and structured activities during non-school hours;

* "a healthy start and future;

* "marketable skills through effective education;

* "opportunities to give back through community service."
