Greeneville makes its third consecutive appearance in the state quarterfinals and the Devils will face their third straight opponent from Chattanooga when they square off against Red Bank on Friday.
This week's game is different in the fact that Greeneville hits the road for the first time of the postseason. The Devils must travel to face the number one ranked Class 4 team in the state in the undefeated Lions. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
Coach Caine Ballard said while Red Bank will clearly be a challenge, the Devils are going into the game with plenty of confidence.
"This group of seniors has won three conference championships in a row. This is the third straight year we've made it to the quarterfinals. This is just a tribute to them and the efforts they've put in," he said. "It's a great place to be, but we'd certainly like to be practicing next week on Thanksgiving."
Greeneville's first two playoff games were against teams from Chattanooga, but they were the ones that had to travel. Now it is the Devils that have to load the bus for a long trip.
"We have tried to keep it the same as far as practice and lifting," Ballard said. "Obviously there is a lot more preparation and we are going to have to leave early. But we are going to try to keep our day as normal as possible on Friday leading up to the trip."
Red Bank is located on the northwest side of Chattanooga and made short work of the other schools in the area this season.
The Lions are 12-0. They've averaged 42 points per game this season. Against the two teams Greeneville has played each of the last two weeks, Red Bank beat Chattanooga Central 35-0 and won 42-8 over Brainerd.
"We've gotten a little bit better as we've gone," said Red Bank coach Tim Daniels. "We won early, but we kind of won ugly. We have eliminated some of our silly mistakes and gotten better as of late."
Ballard is well aware of the Lions' high octane offense.
"They are a really solid football team with a superstar running back," Ballard said. "Most teams that are ranked number one and undefeated have a superstar, and they've got one in their running back. It's going to a huge challenge for our defensive line and our linebackers to try to maintain him as best we can."
Red Bank's superstar running back is senior Keon Williams. He has rushed for 1,700 yards and 35 touchdowns so far this year. He scored six touchdowns in last week's 55-22 playoff win over Fulton.
At quarterback for the Lions is senior Andy Christopher, who has thrown for 1,400 yards and 20 touchdowns.
The Lions, who won the 2000 Class 5A state championship, will mix things up offensively to keep their opponents guessing.
"We like to spread it but will jump in the I," Daniels said. "Our run game we do out of a spread and I game. We will utilize a tight end and then spread it. We are all over the place formation wise."
Red Bank also has an all purpose standout in senior Keith Mayes. He can run or throw the ball out of the backfield and leads the defense with 75 tackles, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Mayes also returns punts and kickoffs and is on the kickoff team.
"We have (focused on defense). We've got to slow them down offensively," Ballard said. "We have to try to win the field position battle like we have the last couple of weeks and be solid on special teams."
If the Devils can slow down Red Bank a little and maintain pace, it could be a high-scoring contest.
Greeneville quarterback Wes Quarles enters the game having completed 114 of 174 passes for 1,817 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Running back B.J. Spradlin, despite missing four games because of injury, has 901 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns.
Rob Wright has caught 46 passes for 833 yards and 11 touchdowns. Kicker Ben Ogle is 63-of-65 on extra points and has hit six field goals.
