Greene County's traditional Veterans Day ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. this Wednesday in front of the Greene County Courthouse.

Tsiming of the ceremony at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month matches the date and time the armistice that ended the First World War took effect at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918.

This year's event is sponsored by American Legion Post 64, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1990 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 42. VFW Post 1990 is in charge of this year's ceremony.

The guest speaker will be state Rep. David Hawk, R-5th, of Greeneville.

The ceremony also will feature a welcome from VFW Post 1990 Commander Gary Beason, an invocation from VFW Post 1990 chaplain Tom Lassing and the pledge to the flag led by VFW Post 1990 Commander Beason.

Also during the ceremony, Gold Star Mothers Louise Rippetoe, Mary Malone and Kelli Read will be honored. Rippetoe and Malone lost sons during the Vietnam War and Read lost a son in Iraq.

The Greene County Honor Guard, which is composed of American Legion Post 64 members, will fire three volleys in honor of fallen service members and also will play the military hymn "Taps" to close the ceremony.

Crosses bearing the names of Greene Countians who were killed in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the war in Iraq were placed on the courthouse lawn on Monday by members of VFW Post 1990, American Legion Post 64.
