Greene County's
traditional Veterans Day ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. this Wednesday in front of the Greene
County Courthouse.
Tsiming of the ceremony at the 11th hour of the 11th
day of the 11th month matches the date and time the armistice that ended the First World War took
effect at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918.
This year's event is sponsored by
American Legion Post 64, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1990 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter
42. VFW Post 1990 is in charge of this year's ceremony.
The guest speaker
will be state Rep. David Hawk, R-5th, of Greeneville.
The ceremony also
will feature a welcome from VFW Post 1990 Commander Gary Beason, an invocation from VFW Post 1990
chaplain Tom Lassing and the pledge to the flag led by VFW Post 1990 Commander
Beason.
Also during the ceremony, Gold Star Mothers Louise Rippetoe, Mary
Malone and Kelli Read will be honored. Rippetoe and Malone lost sons during the Vietnam War and Read
lost a son in Iraq.
The Greene County Honor Guard, which is composed of
American Legion Post 64 members, will fire three volleys in honor of fallen service members and also
will play the military hymn "Taps" to close the ceremony.
Crosses bearing
the names of Greene Countians who were killed in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the
Vietnam War and the war in Iraq were placed on the courthouse lawn on Monday by members of VFW Post
1990, American Legion Post 64.
