SNEEDVILLE -- The Hancock County Indians used North Greene turnovers and the running of tailback Jordan Horton to break open a close game in the second half here Friday night and cruised to a 41-6 season-ending victory.

The win was the first-ever home victory for the Indians in three years of varsity football.

Friday night's victory also was the second recorded by Hancock County during the 2009 season. The first had been an early season road win over Oakdale.

The loss dropped North Greene to 0-10 for the second consecutive season.

North Greene won the pre-game coin toss and and deferred receiving the kickoff until the second half.

Before the game began, Huskies assistant coach Barry Carter had said he hoped the Huskies might be faster at the skill positions than were the Hancock County defenders who were, for the most part, larger than the Huskies across both the offensive and defensive lines.

After receiving the North Greene kickoff, the Indians began their first possession at their own 29 and promptly went three plays and out after they were set back by a false-start penalty.

Hancock's Dustin Dunsmore punted the ball from his 31 to the North Greene 43, where the Huskies' John Lucas made a fair catch of the towering kick.

North Greene also was unable to gain an initial first down after being set back by an illegal substitution penalty and Jeremy Good punted the ball back to the Indians on fourth down.

On first down from the Hancock County 39, the Indians dipped into their bag of tricks with a half-back pass from Jordan Horton to Hunter Carpenter for a TD with 8:17 to play in the opening quarter of the game.

After North Greene was hit with an offsides penalty on the ensuing PAT kick attempt, the Indians opted to go for two points and Jordan Horton got the two-point conversion on a dive into the middle of the North Greene defense. The Indians led 8-0 with 8:17 to play in the opening quarter.

North Greene only managed to keep the ball for two plays after the ensuring kickoff, giving up a fumble at their own 24.

But the Huskies' defense rose to the occasion and mounted a goal-line stand in which they held the Indians out of the end zone after Hancock County picked up a first down at the North Greene 8.

After taking over at their own one-yard line, the Huskies moved the ball out to their 25 before disaster, in the form of a fumble, struck again.

But after taking over at the North Greene 28, Hancock County marched backward, thanks to a holding penalty.

Although a personal foul call moved the ball back inside the North Greene 30, the Indians were not able to capitalize on the second North Greene turnover and punted the ball down to North Greene's 17.

The two teams traded possessions without scoring until the 4:55 mark of the second quarter when a North Greene ball carrier was trapped in the Huskies end zone for a safety. The score padded the Hancock County lead to 10-0.

After North Greene carried out a free-kick following the safety, Hancock County again appeared to be headed for another score late in the second quarter. But the Indians' drive stalled at the North Greene 39 and Dustin Dunsmore again punted the Huskies into a deep hole.

Starting at their own 8-yard line, however, the Huskies mounted their lone scoring drive of the night. After picking up at their own 21, the Huskies went to the air on second down and 9. Huskies QB John Lucas hit Matt Randolph down the middle of the field for 78 yards and a TD.

Randolph out-wrestled two Indian defenders for the pass at the Hancock County 40 and raced into the end zone with 20.8 seconds to play in the opening half. A two-point conversion run attempt by Lucas came up short leaving the half-time score at 10-6.

After intermission in which Hancock County's "Lady Arrows" dance team wowed the Hancock County fans with a performance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller," North Greene came out firing on all cylinders on offense to open the second half.

The Huskies promptly picked up two first downs and moved down to the Indians' 34. But the North Greene drive stalled there on an incomplete pass.

After taking over the ball at their own 34, the Indians mounted another scoring drive behind the running of tailback Horton and fullback James Wright.

Horton got a TD on a one-yard run with 4:57 to play in the third quarter. He had carried the ball on four out of the five plays in the scoring drive. But Wright reeled off a 36-yard run that set up Horton's one-yard TD plunge.

Disaster, this time in the form of a pass interception, struck the Huskies on their next third-quarter possession. Hancock County lineman Bryan Hicks picked off a John Lucas pass at the North Greene 15 and carried it down to the Huskies' one before being stopped.

The Indians scored on third and goal from there to increase their lead to 22-6. Kicker Dunsmore added the PAT to widen the Indians' lead to 23-6 with 3:39 to go in the third quarter.

After getting the ball back, the Huskies appeared to be headed toward a possible score of their own.

But after picking up a first down at their 25, the Huskies were again bitten by the turnover bug when the Indians' Horton recovered a Huskies fumble at the North Greene 21.

A pass interference call moved the ball inside the Huskies' 10 and Horton got another TD on a 4-yard run with 11:55 to go in the game. That made the score 29-6, where it remained after a two-point try off a fake kick failed.

North Greene again was forced to punt from deep in its own territory on the Huskies' next possession.

Hancock County took over at the North Greene 30, but the Huskies' defense rose to the occasion and forced the Indians to give up the ball on downs at the North Greene 28.

After an exchange of possessions, Hancock County's Carpenter returned an interception of a Tanner O'Laughlin pass 90 yards for a TD with 3:59 to play in the game. The PAT kick attempt failed, leaving the score at 35-6.

But Hancock County wasn't done scoring.

North Greene tried to mount a late fourth quarter scoring drive, but the Huskies were forced to give the ball up on downs at the Indians' 30.

After an illegal substitution penalty set Hancock County back five yards, Hancock County's Horton took an inside handoff at the Indians' 25 and raced 75 yards down the right sideline for another TD with a minute left in the game.

The final score stood at 41-6 after a two-point conversion attempt failed.

Before time expired, Indians head coach Pat Lindelow got an ice-water shower from his players to close out the most successful year in Hancock County's brief football history.
