Greeneville claimed its second ever region soccer championship Thursday, rolling past University High 8-0 at Burley Stadium, and earned the right to host Sub-State.
This marks the sixth straight year the Lady Devils have made it to Sub-State, and taking that final step to the state tournament has always been blocked by the likes of Oak Ridge and Bearden.
The Lady Devils hope that on a more level playing field against schools their own size, this will finally be their year to book a trip to Chattanooga.
"We talk all the time about getting on that big bus and going to the state tournament," said Greeneville coach John Eiskamp. "We are pretty close right now. Being able to host a Sub-State game is exciting for these kids as well as coach Jerry Graham and myself. That's what we've always worked for. I think we have a good chance of getting on that bus and taking off, but we have one more game before we can do that."
As Region 1-A/AA champions, the Lady Devils host Pigeon Forge on Saturday at Burley Stadium at 2 p.m. The Lady Tigers lost 5-1 to CAK in the Region 2 final.
Greeneville's region final against University High was a runaway win for the Lady Devils.
Allison McKee scored the Lady Devils' opening goal in the sixth minute and set up three more before the night was over.
Kaitlyn Horner made it 2-0 in the 16th minute, starting a goal frenzy that had GHS's starters out of the game and the Lady Devils up 5-0 at halftime.
Taylor Leng scored in the 19th minute, taking a through ball from McKee before curling a left-footed shot past the keeper.
Caitlyn Darnell was set up by McKee in the 29th minute, blasting a low shot into the back of the net from a tough angle.
Caroline Lodge, who assisted on the Lady Devils' first two goals, scored on a solo effort in the 31st minute. Lodge collected the ball at the top of the box, shook a defender, turned and shot into the back of the net to make it 5-0 at the break.
Marie Scott scored twice in the second half for Greeneville. Her first came in the 56th minute when she took a feed from Sophie Lively and scored from the top of the area. Her second came in the 73rd minute off a corner kick delivered by McKee.
Bree Wilhoit rounded out the goalfest for the Lady Devils, cracking a 35-yard free kick on net that beat the keeper in the 78th minute.
Greeneville starting keeper Alyssa Crum and backup Caroline Quarles were never threatened or really even called into action. The Lady Bucs managed only one loose shot on goal the entire game.
Thursday night's shutout means Greeneville went through its entire regular season conference schedule, district tournament and region tournament with only one goal allowed to a league opponent.
Eiskamp said that's a testament to the entire team.
"You have to look at the quality of the kids we have and the hours they've put in at practice," he said. "This whole campaign started back in July. They've worked extra hard to achieve the goals we have asked them to do."
The Lady Devils (16-5-1) have another big goal ahead of them on Saturday, that's to win Sub-State and earn the school's first ever trip to the state soccer tournament.
