A Bread Truck

Two Chuckey-Doak High School students were injured -- one
critically -- in a collision Monday afternoon with a bread truck at the intersection of Tennessee
Highway 107 and Chuckey Pike.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol declined this
morning to release the names of the injured students, citing uncertainty about the driver's medical
condition and the possibility that charges might be placed in connection with the
accident.
However, Trooper James Fillers said the collision occurred
about 1 p.m. Monday when a subcompact Plymouth Neon driven by one of the students pulled from
Chuckey Pike in an attempt to turn east toward Erwin on Tennessee Highway
107.
But in so doing, according to the THP, the subcompact Plymouth
pulled into the path of a westbound van-type bread truck driven by Scott Gilliland, 58, of Fairview,
N.C.
Gilliland was treated at the scene by Greene County-Greeneville
Emergency Medical Services personnel, but declined transportation to a hospital, an EMS spokesman
said.
In the resulting collision, according to THP Lt. Steve Street, the
Plymouth's driver, a girl, was ejected from the car and critically
injured.
She was flown to the Johnson City Medical Center by a Wings Air
Rescue helicopter. A nursing supervisor said the teen victim was in critical condition there this
morning.
Another girl, who was a passenger in the car, also was injured,
according to the THP.
She was transported by a Greene County-Greeneville
Emergency Medical Services ambulance to Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
This
morning, a hospital spokesman said that injured girl had been treated and
released.
Dr. Joe Parkins, director of Greene County Schools, confirmed
this morning that both of the teens were students at Chuckey-Doak High
School.
Also responding to the accident, in addition to the THP and
Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services (EMS), were units of the Tusculum Volunteer
Fire Department and the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad.
