The Greeneville Civil Service Board on Saturday, Nov. 14, will test those applying for entry-level positions with the Greeneville Fire Department.
Greeneville Fire Chief Mark Foulks said close to 100 entry-level applicants are scheduled to take the test.
The test will begin at 9 a.m. in the lecture hall at Greeneville High School.
This test date was approved by the Civil Service Board during its monthly meeting Thursday evening at Greeneville Town Hall.
The Civil Service Board oversees testing of individuals who apply for positions with the Town of Greeneville's fire and police departments and the recorder's office.
Such tests are typically administered at the Greeneville campus of Walter State Community College. However, Board Chairman Ed Kershaw said the location for the upcoming entry-level testing had to be changed because of the high number of fire department applicants.
"The problem was we had too many people for the (Walter State) site," Kershaw said.
The entry-level test was tentatively scheduled at GHS for Nov. 21, but the date had to be changed because of a choral event scheduled at the high school on that same day, Foulks said.
The Civil Service Board approved ordering of the test, which is the 2009 equivalent to the 2008 test that the board approved last October.
Kershaw said the test will consist of four components:
* 30 points, understanding written information;
* 30 points, mathematical ability;
* 25 points, mechanical ability, and
* 15 points, teamwork/public relations/community living.
Testing for the fire department's captain-level position will be administered on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 9 a.m., at WSCC.
In other acton, the Civil Service Board certified the next two names from the roster for entry-level officer in the Greeneville Police Department.
The certified names that will be submitted to the Greeneville Board of Mayor and Alderman for consideration are Kevin Guinn and Roy Melton.
Last month, the civil service board certified Kevin Guinn and James Craft.
Kershaw said, "I am told that James Craft is in the preliminary process of potentially being hired (by the police department,) so the next eligible person on the list would be Roy Melton," Kershaw said.
Assistant Police Chief Craig Fillers said an offer of employment is going to be made to Craft, if he passes all required testing for the position.
The Civil Service Board's next meeting will be held Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m., at Greeneville Town Hall.
