Merchants, professional offices, banks, churches and the county courthouse will be displaying "Halloween Happenings" posters, which mean that they are prepared to treat youngsters with candy if children are under 13 years of age and are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

COSTUME CONTESTS

At the Towne Square Shopping Center, merchants will be giving out candy and holding the first of three costume contests.

At 4 p.m. there will be a Children's Costume Contest. Age groups will be those up to 23 months; 2-3 years; 4-5 years; 6-7 years; 8-9 years and 10-12 years.

The contestants need to start registering by 3:30 p.m. Ribbons will be given for different costumes. Pictures may be taken at the decorated Photo Op Area located between Central Drug Store and Comcast Cable.

The Lion's Club of Greeneville will hold the second Children's Costume Contest at the County Courthouse at 5 p.m. The contest will have age categories of 0-3 years, 4-6 years, 7-9 years and 10-12 years. Prizes will be awarded to three winners in each age category.

The Adult Costume Contest sponsored by Main Street: Greeneville takes place at the General Morgan Inn lobby beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Inn's employees will also be handing out candy to children.

Main Street: Greeneville will oversee the chalk drawings on the 100 block of North Main Street. Come show your artistic talent. Special prizes for children will be provided by Modern Woodmen of America.

A number of groups and individuals come together to make this annual event exciting and fun for children.

The Greeneville Police Department assists with extra personnel during Halloween Happenings to help ensure the safety of children and adults.

HAY RIDES TO BE OFFERED

The Greeneville Public Works Department will offer hay rides on Depot Street. Children may get on the wagons at the corner of Irish and Depot Street and ride up Depot Street to the parking lot of the Greene County Partnership and back.

The "Theatre-at-Tusculum" will turn the corner of Depot and Main into the "Enchanted Castle" as characters from Beauty and the Beast sing and dance to the music and lyrics of their upcoming musical.

Spooky music will be performed by the piano students of Deane K Gray on the lawn of the County Courthouse.
