A Carpenters
Chapel Road man, who allegedly attempted to run down a sheriff's deputy with a car before leading
officers on a Saturday afternoon chase into a Greeneville hospital, is facing multiple charges
today.
Mack Anderson Lewis, 29, of 30 Carpenters Chapel Road, Mosheim,
was charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident in which Lewis allegedly
attempted to back over Deputy Sheriff Roy Milton with a 2006 Dodge Charger that Lewis allegedly had
taken without permission, according to an arrest warrant.
Det. Sgt. Jeff
Morgan said Deputy Milton had observed the Dodge on the East Andrew Johnson Highway on Saturday
afternoon and attempted to stop the vehicle because it matched the description of a car the had been
reported taken without permission the pervious night.
The car turned off
the East Andrew Johnson Highway onto Haynes Boulevard and pulled to a stop in a parking lot behind
the Greene Villa Motel.
But as Deputy Milton was speaking with the
driver, Morgan said, he saw the driver begin reaching between the car's
seats.
As a result, Morgan said, Deputy Milton began backing away out of
concern for his safety.
"That's when things started to go south," Det.
Sgt. Morgan said.
The driver, later identified as Lewis, put the car into
reverse gear and allegedly attempted to back over Deputy Milton, Det. Sgt. Morgan
said.
In self defense, Morgan said, Deputy Milton fired several shots
from his pistol into the car, but the vehicle managed to speed away despite having sustained two
flat tires.
No injuries were reported in connection with the
incident.
The car was later found by other officers abandoned in the
parking lot of the Okee Dokee Market on Tusculum Boulevard.
Police radio
transmissions indicated that Lewis fled on foot into nearby Laughlin Memorial Hospital after
abandoning the car.
Morgan said deputies and Greeneville police arrested
Lewis near a loading dock behind Laughlin Memorial Hospital after he exited the
building.
Arrest warrants filed by a Deputy Milton indicated that he
charged Lewis with DUI, the second offense of driving on a revoked license and felony evading
arrest.
One arrest warrant alleged that Lewis admitted during questioning
that he had smoked crack cocaine prior to the incident.
Bond for Lewis
was set at $23,000 and he was scheduled to appear today in General Sessions
Court.
