PRINCETON, W.Va. -- The Greeneville Astros squared
off with the Princeton Rays in the rubber match at noon on Wednesday after splitting the first two
games of the series.
Although the Astros fell behind early, unlike the
day before, they were able to bounce back to win the game 5-3.
Back-to-back doubles by David Wendt and Daniel Rhault totaled three runs
scored by the Rays (5-4) in the bottom of the second inning, but that would be all they would
get.
Meanwhile, the Astros (6-3) never scored more than one run in any
inning, but kept fighting back.
A fielding error lead to the Astros
first score by Oscar Figueroa in the third. Figueroa scored again in the fifth when Jiovanni Mier
had a base hit to left field. A Bubby Williams sacrifice fly scored a run in the sixth to tie the
game at 3-3. Another fielding error in the seventh led to Mier scoring the go-ahead run. Then, the
Astros added one more run in the ninth for insurance as Mier had another RBI single to left
field.
Mier, who is batting .300 after his first five games, finished the
game 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored.
David Martinez, who
entered the game during the fifth inning, pitched 2.1 innings and got his first win. Travis Smink
earned his second save as he pitched 2.2 innings and had three strikeouts. He now has a save in
each of his last two appearances.
The Astros return home for a three game
series against the Elizabethton Twins starting tonight at 7 p.m.
