A Greeneville man apparently fatally shot himself on Tuesday at the James H. Quillen Medical Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Johnson City.
A report on file at the Greeneville Police Department indicated that Gerald Pollack, 72, of Kevin Lane, had been reported missing shortly before noon on Tuesday.
Pollack had left a note that said he planned to go to the VA Center in Johnson City and kill himself, the report said.
A spokesman at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center said on Wednesday morning that a man had died after being wounded early Tuesday afternoon on the center's grounds by a single gunshot.
The victim, whom the spokesman declined to identify, was treated initially at the VA Center's hospital and transferred to the Johnson City Medical Center where he later died.
The spokesman, who declined to confirm that Pollack was the shooting victim, said she had been instructed not to release any information.
However, Greeneville Police Chief Terry Cannon said the GPD had been informed that Pollack was the victim.
Cannon referred a Greeneville Sun reporter to the VA Medical Center Police, but they, in turn, referred the reporter to the center's public information officer who declined to comment.
