Longtime Mosheim 1st Ward Alderman Harold Smith withstood a challenge from longtime Planning Commission member Glenn Jones with a seven-vote victory in Tuesday's election.

In Mosheim's 2nd Ward, Alderman Tommy Gregg was re-elected without opposition.

In Tusculum, Mayor John Foster was also re-elected to the city commission, without opposition.

Smith, who is also an elected Greene County Road District commissioner, received 147 votes to Jones' 140 votes.

In a telephone interview this morning, Smith quipped that winning by seven votes is "as good as a thousand."

Smith thanked "everybody that came out and voted for me." He said he will continue to "say what I think" and will "continue to try to get everybody treated the same" in Mosheim.

Smith, who has a reputation as a budget watchdog, pledged to "represent Mosheim the best that my ability will allow me" for the next four years.

Jones, in a separate interview, said Tuesday's election was his first "and my last." Jones, a retiree who serves as a part-time transport deputy with the Greene County Sheriff's Department, said he enjoyed the election process, even if he did not win.

"You get to meet a lot of people," he said.

Jones also thanked "everybody that helped me," and who voted for him. He said he will continue to serve on the Mosheim Planning Commission. He has served on that body for more than 15 years.

Mosheim Alderman Tommy Gregg received 197 complimentary votes. "I really do appreciate that," Gregg said of the vote.

Gregg said he looks forward "to working with Harold (Smith) for another round."

Gregg said the Mosheim board "has got to work together to get things in shape," particularly sewers.

TUSCULUM

Tusculum Mayor John Foster, who ran unopposed, received 46 complimentary votes, though there were also three write-in votes. Only 18 people voted on election day in Tusculum, with the majority of the votes cast early or absentee.

Foster, a retiree who is also a former Greene County commissioner, said this morning that this was his fifth election, but the first time he has not had an opponent.

"I do appreciate the vote I received," Foster said, adding, "I will continue to do the best I can for as long as I can."
Foster was re-elected to the Tusculum City Commission, which will choose the city's mayor from among its members.
