A fire of undetermined origin slightly damaged a vacant Greene County residence about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters with the Newmansville and Tusculum volunteer fire departments extinguished the fire in the 200 block of Dashaway Road.
Emergency radio transmissions indicated that a Newmansville VFD firefighter reported the fire to Greene County 911, saying that he saw smoke pouring from the single-story, frame structure.
Jonathan Williams, chief of the Newmansville VFD, said the fire was located in a crawl space beneath the house.
He said he did not know who owned the house.
"There was very little fire, but it had filled the house full of smoke," Williams said. "There was very little structural damage."
He noted that the fire might have been started by lightning, because there had been "a lot of lightning" in the area shortly before the fire was discovered.
"We didn't find evidence of a lightning strike, but lightning can travel quite a distance from the point of a strike to a structure," Williams said.
The two fire departments sent about a dozen firefighters and five trucks to the fire scene, according to Williams.
He noted that the house did not have electric power.
Deputy Sheriff Roy Milton also responded to the fire.
