Local authorities are investigating several business burglaries during the weekend, including one in which $4,000 worth of cigarettes were stolen.
The owner of the J&M Package Store at 18840 Horton Highway, Fall Branch, reported on Sunday that the store had been burglarized overnight, according to a report filed by Deputy Sheriff Jeff Caudill.
Seventy cartons of cigarettes, valued at $4,000, was stolent, along with three cases of Levi Garrett chewing tobacco, valued at $102; two boxes of rolling papers; a case of Silver Creek chewing tobacco; and $410 in cash, according to the report.
Entry to the building was gained by cutting a padlock from a door, according to the report, which indicated that the total loss was more than $4,100.
On Sunday night, an employee of West Main Recycling told GPD Officer Gina Holt that between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. someone broke a rear window from the business, entered and stole $300 in cash from the register.
The report noted that the building's electric meter had been removed from its base. Damage to the building was estimated at $225, the report said.
Two other police reports said New Attitude Fitness, at 40 Benbow Road, was twice the victim of thieves over the weekend.
A report filed at 10:08 p.m. Saturday, by GPD Officer Gina Holt said the owner of the business told her she had stopped by the business to check on it and had found a white pickup truck occupied by one man parked beside the building.
When the owner went inside, the report said, she encountered a second man, who fled.
After the suspect fled, according to the report, the owner found that two 19-inch TV sets had been stolen from their wall mounts. The owner also found that a quantity of loose change had been taken from the cash register.
The loss was estimated at $510 and damage to a side door was estimated at $50.
Another police report, filed at 7:22 a.m. on Saturday, by GPD Sgt. Steve Spano said an employee of New Attitude Fitness told police that overnight someone stole a park bench, a 20-foot extension ladder and a propane tank from outside the business.
The loss was estimated at $440.
In addition, two trucks parked outside Greene County Express on the West Andrew Johnson Highway were burglarized between Friday and Sunday.
A report filed by Deputy Sheriff Mike Shipley said an employee of the business told him about 2 p.m. Sunday that windows were broken from both trucks by thieves who then stole citizens band radios from them.
One radio was valued at $650, while the second was valued at $150, according to the report.
