Residents escaped injury in a Christmas night fire that heavily damaged their home at 5130 Kingsport Highway.

A report filed by Deputy Sheriff Jeff Caudill about 9:30 p.m. Thursday said no one was home when the blaze broke out.

Resident Casey Brotherton came home to find the one-story house on fire.

The report listed the owner of the house as Amy E. Adams and noted that the cause of the fire remained undetermined at the time the sheriff's department report was filed.

Units of the Newmansville and Tusculum Volunteer Fire Departments responded to and extinguished the fire, which heavily damaged the home's interior and melted vinyl siding around doors and windows.

Firefighters were called back to the scene early today after the fire inside the structure rekindled, Tusculum VFD Assistant Chief Eric Roberts said.

The second call to the fire scene was the result of smoldering insulation inside the residence, according to Roberts.

"We only stayed about 30 minutes the second time," Roberts said.

He noted that seven fire trucks and about 20 firefighters from the two departments responded to the first fire alarm.

Also responding, in addition to firefighters and Deputy Sheriff Caudill, was a Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad unit, which was summoned to refill the air tanks of firefighters' self-contained breathing apparatus.

In addition, a disaster services unit from the Greene County Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the scene.
