Local Gas Cheaper

Than In Knoxville,

But Higher Than

In Johnson City

By DOUGLAS WATSON

Managing Editor

As most motorists have noticed, gasoline prices have fallen substantially lately.

The Greeneville Sun's weekly survey of prices, which is done on Wednesdays at 14 local service stations, found these average prices for a gallon of regular, unleaded gas in recent weeks:

* $2.91.9 on Oct. 15;

* $3.48.9 on Oct. 8;

* $3.72.5 on Oct. 1;

* $3.85.7 on Sept. 24;

* $408.8 on Sept. 17;

Thus, the average price in Greeneville for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline has dropped by $1.17 from $4.08.8 on Sept. 17 to $2.91.9 on Oct. 15.

This week was the first time since January the average price of regular unleaded gasoline dropped below $3 here, according to the Sun's weekly surveys.

The AAA East Tennessee Web site showed a variety of prices for regular unleaded gasoline in this region, based on credit-card swipes during three days this week.

The average prices shown Wednesday by AAA on its Web site were:

Knoxville -- $3.02

Johnson City -- $2.83

Bristol -- $3.00

Morristown -- $3.01

Jonesborough -- $2.83

Newport -- $3.11

This week, according to these figures, the average prices of a regular unleaded gallon of gasoline was lower in Greeneville than it was in Newport, Knoxville, Morristown and Bristol.

However, the AAA survey shows, the average price of gas this week was higher in Greeneville than it was in Johnson City and Jonesborough.
