Charges are pending against two Mosheim-area residents in connection with a three-vehicle accident Friday night at Mohawk Crossroads in western Greene County that injured five people, including three children.

Trooper Eric Wise said the collision occurred about 8:45 p.m. Friday when a 1992 Honda Accord driven by Ricky Swatzell, 32, of 1885 Elmer Hayes Road, attempted to cross the southbound lanes of U.S. 11E to reach Gap Creek Road and pulled into the path of a southbound 2005 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Bruce McFarland, 46, of Chuckey Highway, Chuckey.

After the collision with the pickup, the Honda continued forward and struck a Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven by Charles Hawkins, 27, of Powell, Tenn., as the pickup sat at a stop sign on Gap Creek Road, Trooper Wise said.

Seriously injured in the collision were Swatzell and his front-seat passenger Angela McNutt, 28, also of 1885 Elmer Hayes Road, Mosheim.

Swatzell and McNutt had been flown in separate Wings Air Rescue and WellmontOne Air Transport helicopters to the Johnson City Medical Center, Trooper Wise said.

Swatzell was listed in serious condition there this morning, according to a nursing supervisor who said McNutt was brought to the emergency room on Friday night but was not admitted.

Also flown from the scene by a WellmontOne helicopter was a 12-year-old boy who had been a rear-seat passenger in the car driven by Swatzell and owned by McNutt.

Trooper Wise said on Sunday that all three children who had been rear-seat passengers in the car driven by Swatzell had been injured in the crash. But he declined the release the childrens' names.

Charges of DUI (6th offense), violating the habitual motor-vehicle offender law, failure to yield the right of way and having no proof of vehicle insurance were placed against Swatzell, who was flown to the Johnson City Medical Center on Friday night.

A charge of DUI by consent was placed against McNutt, the registered owner of the car that Swatzell was driving, according to Trooper Wise, who said McNutt was flown to the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport on Friday night.
