Two people escaped a burning mobile home in Mosheim early this morning.
A report filed by Deputy Sheriff Michael MacDonald said the fire took place at a 283 Baughard Hill Road mobile home owned by Lloyd Jackson.
James Foshie, the Town of Mosheim Fire Department's safety lieutenant, said his department was dispatched by Greene County 911 at 2:48 a.m. to the mobile home, which was rented by Marcia Bailey.
Two people were inside the residence at the time the fire broke out, according to Lt. Foshie.
"A male occupant was awakened by the smoke and flames and then alerted the other resident, Marcia Bailey, and the two escaped through a window," Lt. Foshie wrote in an e-mail.
Lt. Foshie said firefighters did not obtain the name of the man who escaped the burning structure.
One of the residents suffered a cut foot during the escape from the burning structure and was treated at the scene by Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services personnel, according to Lt. Foshie.
He noted that firefighters found the mobile home about three-quarters engulfed in flames when they reached the scene.
"Once on scene, firefighters found a single-wide mobile home approximately 70 percent engulfed in flames," Lt. Foshie wrote in an e-mail. "Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 10 minutes using about 1,000 gallons of water."
The blaze, he said, possibly began in the living room area of the mobile home.
"On our arrival, the living room, kitchen and a bedroom were engulfed in flames," Foshie said.
Firefighters remained on scene until 6 a.m. working to ensure that the fire was out.
"The home's contents were destroyed in the fire," Lt. Foshie said.
The Sheriff's Department report said mobile-home owner Jackson estimated damage to the mobile home at about $40,000.
Lt. Foshie noted that the Town of Mosheim Fire Department responded twice in February to the same mobile home after small fires broke out beneath the structure.
Also responding to the fire early today were a disaster services unit from the Greene County Chapter of the American Red Cross, a Greeneville Light & Power System crew and the Greene County Sheriff's Department.
Lt. Foshie said the Midway Volunteer Fire Department also initially was dispatched to the fire, but was told to ignore the call after Town of Mosheim FD units quickly extinguished the blaze.
