ROSE Staff Writer A short section
of Tusculum Boulevard in front of the Niswonger Performing Arts Center is being widened to help with
traffic congestion. David Martin, director of the Greeneville Public
Works Department, said the project to add a center turn lane began Monday and is expected to take
two to three weeks to complete. The work is being done by the Tennessee
Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Public Works Department, Martin
said. The project also includes relocation of the sidewalks that connect
the NPAC, which is on the campus of Greeneville High School, to several parking lots in the
area. Martin said he hopes all the sidewalks can be replaced with the
widening. He noted that the existing sidewalks were in need of repair. He
explained that the addition of a center turn lane will increase safety by helping the flow of
traffic in that area of the boulevard, particularly for motorists trying to turn left into the
NPAC. Martin noted that the portions of Tusculum Boulevard surrounding
the project already have a center turning lane. He said two lanes of
traffic will remain open during most of the project, but, at times, motorists will be stopped by
flaggers. The project is being paid for by a $50,000 grant from TDOT,
Martin said.
