Bewley To Restore

Community Gym

Where His Father

Played Basketball

By NELSON MORAIS

Staff Writer

An appreciative but scattered crowd of about 75 people gathered along the two-lane Warrensburg Road watched a Fourth of July parade on Saturday in the Warrensburg community.

The patriotic parade, held under threatening rain clouds, included antique tractors, floats, a handful of dignitaries and candidates for public office, fire engine trucks, a Greene County sheriff's car and even a pot-bellied pig.

"I was so worried we would be rained out," said Christie Lawrence, chairman of the Fourth of July parade, at the staging area just prior to the parade. In fact, light rain fell very briefly, but not enough to stop the parade or dampen the apparent festive spirit among many.

Trophy Winners

Parade trophy winners were: first place, Iva Campbell, the Warrensburg Community Center's "Member of the Year;" second place, Warrensburg Church; and third place, Shannon Smith and Autumn Gorman with their pot-bellied pig, "Petunia."

Gym To Be Restored

Businessman Kent Bewley was the parade's grand marshal.

Bewley said his company, Bewley Properties, is restoring a gymnasium built in the 1920's that is located next to the Warrensburg Community Center.

Bewley said his late father, Roswell Bewley, played basketball in the gymnasium when he was a varsity player at Warrensburg High School.

"It's a building worth restoring," Kent Bewley said.

He said plans called for the restoration to begin July 14 and take approximately three weeks.

Following the parade, a fundraiser meal for the gymnasium restoration was held in the community center.

Becky Bowers, of Chuckey, and Laura Taliaferro, of Greeneville, sang patriotic and gospel songs. An auction and cake walk were also held.
