Firefighters Halt

Spread Of Flames

To Another Home

By BILL JONES

Staff Writer

A residence at the intersection of North Loretta Street and Willis Street was destroyed by a fire of undetermined origin early Sunday.

Greeneville Fire Department Lt. Marty Shelton said four fire engines and 10 firefighters responded to the 3:11 a.m. blaze.

"When I arrived, the house was about 80 percent involved in flames," Shelton said.

At the scene on Sunday morning, Shelton said firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to a nearby residence and to several vehicles that were parked beside the burning house. The fire burned away the roof and gutted the interior of the one-story house.

Lt. Shelton said no one was thought to be at the house at the time the fire broke out.

A fire department report listed the owner as Ray Britt.

Firefighters remained on the scene until about 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

Damage to the house was estimated at $40,000, while contents were estimated at $20,000.

Saturday Night Fire

The North Loretta Street fire was the second fought by the GFD in as many nights.

At 11:36 p.m. Saturday, July 5, the GFD dispatched to another fire at 323 N. Highland Ave., according to a GFD spokesman.

The unoccupied house had burned about six months earlier, a GFD spokesman.

Firefighters remained on the scene of that fire until 1:37 a.m. Saturday.
