Some 75 to 100 members of the Direct Descendants of David Crockett and Kin organization will be in Greeneville and Greene County July 10 through 12 for a Crockett family reunion.

Crockett, the legendary 19th century frontiersman, political figure and Alamo hero, was born in eastern Greene County near the confluence of Big Limestone Creek and the Nolichucky River on Aug. 17, 1786.

He died during the War for Texas Independence in March 1836 while defending the Alamo in present day San Antonio, Texas, from the Mexican army.

"As the family does every two years we descendants and friends gather for a three-day reunion to meet with old friends, tour where Davy had lived and study genealogy," the Direct Descendants of David Crockett & Kin (DDDC) Web site says.

Headquarters for visiting David Crockett descendants will be the Comfort Inn on the East Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville, according to the group's Web site.

Schedule Of Events

A schedule posted on the Web site of the DDDC Web site says that:

* On Thursday, July 10, those taking part in the Crockett family reunion will be invited to watch a re-enactment of the siege of Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Site in Elizabethton.

At 7 p.m. on July 10 a genealogy session will be held at the Comfort Inn.

* On Friday, July 11, the descendants and friends will take part in bus tours of the Museum of Appalachia in Norris and the Crockett Tavern Museum in Morristown.

* On Saturday, July 12, activities at David Crockett Birthplace Park in Limestone will be the focus of the group's day-time activities.

Mark Halback, superintendent of the David Crockett Birthplace State Park, said July 12 activities at the park will include tours of the park, music by the Lost Mountain String Band and remarks by state Representatives David Hawk, R-5th, of Greeneville, and Eddie Yokley, D-11th, of Greene County.

* On Saturday evening, July 12, a banquet of the annual Direct Descendants of David Crockett and Kin will be held at the Comfort Inn in Greeneville.
