A flag retirement ceremony will be held on Friday, May 30, at 7 p.m. on the grounds of the Baileyton United Methodist Church.
The ceremony will be hosted by Cub Scout Pack 198, consisting of scouts from Baileyton, Ottway and Keplar elementary schools.
The event is part of the Memorial Day and Flag Day observance.
The purpose is to properly dispose of American flags that, according to the United States Flag Code, are "in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display," and "should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."
An American flag, saved by the Baileyton Volunteer Fire Department from the burning Baileyton UMC, will be retired, along with flags brought by community members, churches, schools and Ruritans.
Anyone having a flag they wish to have retired should call James Smith (620-3542), Nikki Pierce (234-3511), or Dale Keffer (234-7262) by May 23.
Anyone who knows a local veteran who should receive a personal invitation to be honored by the scouts is asked to contact any of the above persons.
