This year's book sale turned out to be the most successful ever and raised $20,088 for the Greeneville-Greene County Library, according to director Madge Walker.

The proceeds from the annual sale, held on May 2-3, will go toward buying books and tapes for children and young adults and to purchase large-print books for the Books on Wheels program.

The Books on Wheels program delivers books to the senior citizens who cannot get to the library. The program works with Meals on Wheels and was started three years ago with a grant from the state of Tennessee.

Walker said the book sale wouldn't have been possible without the "outpouring of community support" that saw dozens of truckloads of books being brought to the sale at a warehouse behind the Food City at the corner of Snapps Ferry Road and Tusculum Boulevard.

Walker thanked everyone who donated books to be sold. She said many books were received from families who donated books from a late relative's personal library.

Walker also wanted to thank the Newcomer Club of Greeneville and the Greeneville Youth Builders for all of their hard work in sponsoring the sale, and also the jail inmates who worked to set up the sale, and Terry Leonard for the use of his warehouse.
