Greene County Trustee Dan Walker was badly burned in an accident Monday night.
Walker was listed this morning as being in critical condition in the burn unit at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., according to a hospital spokesperson.
An employee of the Greene County Trustee's office said Walker was injured Monday night while burning brush on his property off George Malone Road in northern Greene County.
The employee said Walker's daughter, Beth McNeese, reported that Walker was attempting to drag a fallen tree into a "burn pile" with a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle when the vehicle struck a stump, overturned and threw Walker into the fire.
Walker, who was trapped beneath the overturned vehicle, managed to free himself and telephone his sister, Zan Walker, for help using a cell phone.
Zan Walker then found her injured brother and summoned help.
Walker was treated initially at Laughlin Memorial Hospital before being transferred to the North Carolina burn center.
The trustee's office employee said Walker's daughter, Beth McNeese, is with her father at the burn center.
That center, according to its Web site, has eight beds in the burn ICU and 16 beds in the acute care unit, with two hydrotherapy areas for wound care, and a gym for therapy.
