The Laughlin Hospital Medical Staff Scholarship, established in 1997, has been renamed The Dr. Walter C. Chapman Memorial Medical Scholarship Fund.
"The motion to rename the scholarship was introduced and passed during a regular meeting in April 2008 of the LMH Medical Staff and was overwhelmingly accepted by the executive committee of Laughlin Health Care Foundation," a hospital press release said.
The late Dr. Chapman, an orthopaedic surgeon, was a leader in care of patients in this community for more than 35 years. He established the Greeneville Orthopaedic Clinic.
Dr. Chapman died on Feb. 17, 2008.
The hospital's statement said of Dr. Chapman, "He will be remembered for his love of family and friends, his tremendous contributions to orthopedic care in this community, the game of golf, his quick humor and smile, his soft-heartiness, and his noted musical talent of whistling.
"An avid football fan, Dr. Chapman will be remembered for his untiring efforts to create the Greene County Sports Medicine Association and for establishing the athletic training program at Tusculum College."
