This Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4, Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park in Limestone will be hosting its third annual Appalachian Craft Fair, with a total of 46 vendors.

The event is sponsored by the park's "Pioneer Friends" group, a non-profit organization which supports a number of activities at the park.

The craft fair "showcases local artisans and the traditional style of homemade arts and crafts," said Park Ranger Dawn Coleman.

Activities will include Bluegrass musicians T.V. Barnett and the Roan Mountain Moonshiners on Saturday.

Crafters will be demonstrating fiber spinning, animal tanning, basketry, dough bowl making and an antique grist mill, among others. "We have a special guest we are highlighting at our museum, Mr. Chaz Kuehn, who makes beautiful wooden clocks," Coleman said.

"There is so much talent here in our own community and it will be a great weekend to show off that talent to the public," Coleman said. "I have asked local farmers to participate in this year's event. They are a vital part of the local heritage," she said.

The replica Crockett birthplace cabin will be open to walk through, as will the park's small Crockett museum, and reenactors will be on hand to talk about Crockett's boyhood along the Nolichucky River, "and the ways of our ancestors," Coleman said.

She added, "This year has really surprised me. We have over 46 vendors set to participate," compared with 25 last year, including food and "sweet treat" vendors. She said the park staff is interested in "quality, not quantity," but is also interested in making sure "everyone is having a good time."
