The South Greene Rebels' soccer team finished out their regular season with a win against Rutledge Thursday night, 5-1.
South Greene came out first with a goal in the 8th minute when Eddie Cedillo scored with an assist from brother Frank Cedillo, putting the Rebels up 1-0. In the 13th minute it was Frank Cedillo who found the back of the net with an assist from Stephan van der Merwe. It was then Andrew Cedillo in the 19th minute who found the back of the net putting the Rebels up 3-0.
Rutledge didn't let up. Aaron Ramirez kept them from having a scoreless game when he found the net in the 23rd minute. South Greene finished the half with a goal from van der Merwe putting the Rebels up 4-1.
Both teams came out strong in the second half with only one goal being scored. In the 48th minute Jackson Scott brought the ball up the field, attempted the shot having it first blocked by a Rutledge player, bouncing off another player and going in the goal, giving the Rebels a 5-1 win.
Coach Kimberly Shelton praised the defensive work of Josh Arwood, Nick Smith, Daniel Price, Nick Laughlin, Ethan Peterson, Michael Finnerty and goalie Roger Sherman, who had an easy night with nine saves.
"This was Senior Night for the guys and even though they went out to win, they wanted to have fun and enjoy the game," said Coach Shelton. "I'm very proud of the whole team, especially the seniors who have worked so hard this year."
The Rebels finish 5-8-1 in the regular season. They travel to Elizabethton on Tuesday for a district tournament game.
