Nearly 20 tons of household waste was collected from 86 vehicles Saturday at a "free disposal day" at the Greeneville-Greene County Landfill/Transfer Station.

The event was held in conjunction with Keep Greene Beautiful's "Great American Cleanup efforts, according to Jennifer Reynolds, director of Keep Greene Beautiful.

Reynolds said 19.68 tons of household waste was collected from 61 cars, and 25 motorists came to the landfill to purchase mulch that was for sale.

The free disposal was for households only. Items that were not accepted included tires, electronic items such as computers, televisions, etc., and any type of liquids or fluids. Also, no commercial or business waste was accepted.

The event was designed to encourage residents to clean up around their property and clean basements and garages to rid themselves of clutter and unwanted items.

For more information, call Reynolds at the Greene County Partnership, 638-4111.
