Units of the Newmansville and Limestone Volunteer Fire Departments responded about 5:45 a.m. today to a fire in the 3600 block of Old Snapps Ferry Road.

Capt. Kevin Tarlton of the Newmansville VFD said that when he arrived at the double-wide mobile home at 3660 Old Snapps Ferry Road residence of the James Richards family "heavy smoke" was pouring from it.

He reported that the four members of the Richards family had been awakened by smoke and had escaped without injury prior to his arrival.

"I could hear fire, but I couldn't see it when I first arrived," Capt. Tarlton said.

He said firefighters were able to confine the fire to the living room and den of the mobile home. But the rest of the structure sustained heavy smoke damage, he said.

Capt. Tarlton said firefighters were unsure what had caused the early morning fire.

The Newmansville VFD sent three trucks and a dozen firefighters to battle the blaze, while the Limestone VFD sent two trucks and seven firefighters to the scene.

Firefighters remained on the scene until about 8:20 a.m., Capt. Tarlton said.

Also responding to the fire were Deputy Sheriff Jason Taylor and a disaster services unit from the Greene County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The fire rekindled about 9:45 a.m. and Greene County 911 dispatched Newmansville VFD firefighters to the scene.
