An elderly Chuckey man apparently suffered a heart attack while driving on the Erwin Highway just after 5 p.m. Saturday, causing his vehicle to hit a car waiting to make a turn, which caused that car to hit another car.

The driver was identified in a Greene County deputy's report as Shadrack E. Hampton, 81, of 3351 Highway 107, Chuckey.

Hampton was transported by helicopter to Laughlin Memorial Hospital and then to Johnson City Medical Center, where he was pronouced dead due to a cardiac arrest, according to the report.

All three vehicles were westbound, and two vehicles were stopped, waiting to make a left turn into Horse Creek Park Road, the report said.

The first car that Hampton's Volvo hit was driven by Carolyn E. Milan, of Johnson City, according to the report.

The impact caused Milan's Honda to strike an SUV driven by Karisha D. Larkins, of Elizabethton.

Passengers in both vehicles were transported to Laughlin Memorial Hospital by EMS, according to the report.
