An Afton man was released on bond Tuesday pending trial in January in U.S. District Court here on a charge of stealing a handgun from a federally licensed firearms dealer earlier this year.

Federal court records indicate that Jeffery A. Roark, 23, of Doty Chapel Road, Afton, was released on bond, subject to conditions, following a Tuesday morning bound hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Dennis Inman.

During an initial appearance in U.S. District Court at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Judge Inman scheduled a Jan. 14 trial for Roark before Senior U.S. District Judge Leon Jordan.

Roark, according to court records, had been indicted Nov. 13 by a federal grand jury on a charge of stealing a handgun from the Dixie Pawn Shop on North Main Street Extended.

The indictment alleged that Roark stole a Taurus Model PT140 .40-cal. handgun from the business on Oct. 27.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Helen Smith, who is prosecuting the case, said Roark faces a maximum possible punishment of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted. He also faces spending up to five years on supervised probation after he completes any prison sentence imposed, Smith said.
