Nic, a police dog who was discovered missing Saturday, was found unharmed by a sheriff's deputy on Sunday morning.

Greene County Sheriff Steve Burns said Nic was found by Deputy Sheriff Michael MacDonald, who is the dog's handler, along Pates Lane off the Newport Highway.

"He was in a driveway with another dog," the sheriff said of Nic.

On Saturday morning the Greene County Sheriff's Department had asked for the public's help in locating Nic.

Sheriff Burns said on Saturday that Nic, a brown-and-black Belgian Malinois, was discovered missing from his outdoor kennel Saturday morning at the Marshall Lane residence of Deputy MacDonald.

Burns said officers speculate that Nic may have been frightened by Fourth of July fireworks that were discharged in the area on Friday night and scaled the chain-link fence that surrounds his kennel.

The sheriff said the kennel door was closed and a lock was still in place when Nic was discovered missing Saturday morning.

Nic is trained to detect illegal drugs and to help apprehend fleeing suspects.
