A Wednesday afternoon three-car crash at the intersection of the Asheville Highway and Vann Road sent two people to Takoma Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries.

GPD Officer Joe Prokop, who investigated the crash said it took place when an eastbound 2007 Toyota RAV4 sport-utility vehicle driven by Shirley Peters, 70, of DeBusk Road was unable to stop and struck the rear of a 2007 Toyota Avalon driven by Stephen Haun, 51, of Dominic Lane, that was stopped in traffic for a red traffic signal.

The impact of the collision sent Haun's car into the rear of a 2005 Honda Accord driven by off-duty GPD Officer Louis Calobrisi that also was stopped at the traffic signal.

Officer Prokop said Haun and his passenger Stephee Haun, 14, both were injured and transported by a Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services ambulance to Takoma Regional Hospital for treatment of what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Peters declined medical treatment at the scene and Calobrisi was not injured, according to Officer Prokop.

The accident took place directly in front of a Greeneville Fire Station at the corner of the Asheville Highway and Vann Road, according to Officer Prokop, who said firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to cut away the top of Haun's car so that he could be removed more easily by EMS personnel.

Officer Prokop said Haun was not trapped but was unable to move from the car because of back and neck pain.

After the top of the car was removed, EMS personnel secured Haun to a "backboard" before removing him from the car.
