Science Hill eased past Greeneville on Friday at the Greeneville/Greene County Tennis Center and advanced to the TSSAA Sectionals with a 4-0 victory.

The District 2 champion Devils and District 1 champion Hilltoppers squared off first with five singles matches, going best two out of three sets, with the first team to four victories winning. The meet would go to doubles only if necessary, but it didn't get that far.

Science Hill swept its way to the win with the first four matches completed.

Greeneville coach Steve Collins said he hated to end the season on that note, but he had no complaints about the Devils' overall campaign.

The Devils finish the year 11-2 overall and captured the Inter-Mountain Conference title outright with a perfect 10-0 mark in the league.

"Our first goal is to win the conference," Collins said. "Our next goal is to win the district. One doesn't always mean the other. We did win the district, which put us right here. A goal would be to win this and go on to the sectionals. We'll shoot for that next year."

This year marked the first time Greeneville has earned a spot in the region tournament since capturing back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004. Those championships were bitter-sweet because the Devils didn't have a home court to call their own.

Collins said the team was grateful for what they have now.

"We were proud of our team back in 2003 and 2004. We were glad that they won, but not having the facilities to play, we had to travel," he said. "We couldn't host it. We are really pleased with what the local tennis association has done ... the community, the city and county governments ... in providing us this facility to play on and host this event. It's big for us."

Greeneville's best showing came from Reston Hartsell, who was defeated at No. 1 by Christopher Smith, 6-2, 6-1.

That match was a preview of next week's individual regional tournament when Hartsell and Smith will square off again.

Also on Friday, Science Hill got a 6-0, 6-1 victory from John Story over Matthew Smith at No. 3; a 6-0, 6-0 win from Michael Chen over Weston Epley at No. 4 and a 6-1, 6-0 win by Jordan Eddy over John-Wesley Patterson at No. 5.

Greeneville's Chris DeWitt and Science Hill's Hayden Holbrook played a non-scoring match as far as the region goes with Holbrook coming out on top 6-0, 6-0.

The match between Greeneville's Devansh Patel and Science Hill's Drew Kerr at No. 2 did not get under way because Kerr was late arriving.
