A total of 4,975 locations, including those of several local industries, were without electricity for about 40 minutes Monday afternoon.

Chuck Bowlin, Greeneville Light & Power System's operations manager, said the power outage occurred at 2:25 p.m., and all power was restored by just after 3 p.m.

Bowlin said the outage was caused when a tree-trimming crew with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) hit a guy wire, resulting in outages at three GL&PS substations in northwestern Greene County.

The tree-trimming crew was working along Lonesome Pine Trail, about three miles from Interstate 81, Bowlin said.

He explained that a tractor being used by the TVA crew struck the guy wire, causing the wire to hit a high-voltage line.

No injuries were reported.

The GL&PS substations affected by the outage were Albany, Mohawk and Pottertown, Bowlin said.

Among the affected customers were several industries in the Pottertown Road area, including the Wal-Mart Distribution Center and the DTR Tennessee and Vistawall plants, Bowlin noted.
