The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but rain forced postponement until today. The Greene Devils advanced on Friday night with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Cocke County in an elimination game. The Devils used three solo home runs to help put away the Fighting Cocks, including a walk-off blast by Justin Merkle in the seventh inning. After Cocke County squeezed across a run early, GHS pitcher Ryan Fillers retired 12 straight hitters. The Devils overcame the 1-0 deficit with back-to-back home runs by Cody Duncan and Tyler Stewart in the fourth. Greeneville tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, one scoring on an RBI double by Merkle and another coming across off an error when Ryan Duncan's grounder was mishandled. But Cocke County battled back to tie the score in the sixth, highlighted by a two-out, two-run double by Drew Crawford. The score stayed that way until the home half of the seventh when Merkle's blast cleared the right field fence. Copyright © 2008, The Greeneville Sun |
