West Greene closed out their Watauga Conference regular season in fine fashion Tuesday afternoon, exploding past the visiting Johnson County Longhorns 12-2 in five innings to enter the upcoming District 1-AA Tournament on a high note.

The Buffs, who won for only the second time in the conference this season but improved their overall mark to 7-13, clubbed three home runs in a seven-run second inning that propelled them past the Longhorns.

West Greene will go into Saturday's district tournament at Elizabethton's Joe O'Brien Field as the No. 7 seed and will play No. 2 seed Elizabethton at noon. No. 8 seed South Greene will take on No. 1 seed Unicoi County at 2:30, and No. 3 seed Chuckey-Doak will play at 7:30 against the No. 6 seed Johnson County.

The Buffs got a strong pitching performance from Brandon Campbell, one of three seniors honored on "Senior Day." Michael Hopson and Adrian Sauceman were also recognized in their final home game at West Greene. Campbell allowed seven hits, but his defense backed him with good play.

After scoring a solo run in the first inning on a couple of hits, a walk and a Johnson County error, West Greene really got things going in the bottom of the second.

After Hopson walked with one out, Jordan Davis unleashed a two-run homer to left, and then Sauceman made it back-to-back jacks with a towering homer to right to up the lead to 4-0.

The Buffs were not through. Jordan Ward reached on an error, and Dalton Lamb was hit by a pitch. Zach McCamey bunted, and Ward scored when the ball was thrown away at first base after the bunt. Chance Lamb followed that up when he stroked a three-run shot into the trees beyond the right field fence to up the lead to 8-0.

The Longhorns threatened in the third after Matt Cornett and Ronnie Roark opened the inning with singles. Justin Paisley hit into a fielder's choice, then Cornett was thrown out at home plate trying to score on a wild pitch as Buff catcher Ward chased the ball down and threw to Campbell covering the plate.

West Greene opened up a 10-0 lead with two more runs in the bottom of the third. Ward had an RBI double plating Davis, who had walked, and Ward later scored on a wild pitch.

The Buffs continued to circle the bases in the fourth with two more runs. Hopson knocked in one run with a fielder's choice, and Ward had the other RBI when he walked with the bases loaded.

Johnson County averted the shutout with two runs in the fifth to close to 12-2, but that would not be enough to extend the game which was called due to the 10-run "mercy" rule. Luke Arnold had an RBI hit in the fifth for the Horns and Josh Dowell drove in a run on an infield force play.

Davis, Sauceman and Chance Lamb had two hits each for West Greene. Arnold had two hits for Johnson County.
