A woman from the Greystone community was listed in serious condition at the Johnson City Medical Center this morning following an accident Monday afternoon on U.S. 11E at its intersection with the northern end of Chuckey Highway.

Lynne S. Olka, 65, of Jennings Creek Lane, was flown to the Johnson City Medical Center by a Wings Air Rescue helicopter, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. David Burns, who investigated the 2:45 p.m. wreck.

Lt. Burns said he thinks Olka may have suffered some type of medical problem before the accident.

He noted that a witness to the crash told him that the Dodge pickup truck being driven north on 11E by Olka had veered off the highway to the right and "tapped" a roadside guardrail before striking head-on the end of a guardrail at the intersection of 11E and Chuckey Highway.

Burns, who said he was flagged down by a motorist who had witnessed the accident as he drove south on U.S. 11E, said that when he reached the scene, Olka was still inside the vehicle and that bystanders had been unable to open the driver's door.

He described Olka as "disoriented" and unable to respond to rescuers.

Burns said he called for an ambulance before managing to enter the truck through its unlocked passenger door and remained with Olka until medical assistance arrived.

After Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived, he said, they summoned a Wings Air Rescue helicopter.

Olka was flown to the Johnson City Medical Center, where she was listed in serious condition this morning, according to a nursing supervisor.

Local emergency officials said volunteer firefighters and units from the Greeneville Emergency and Rescue Squad and Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the scene. A Greene County Sheriff's Department officer also assisted with traffic control.
