Three people were injured in a three-vehicle collision that occurred shortly before 2:45 p.m. Friday on Baileyton Road near Doughty's Chapel Road.

Two victims were flown from the scene to the Johnson City Medical Center, while a third was taken by private vehicle to Laughlin Memorial Hospital from treatment.

Trooper Eric Wise, who investigated the collision for the Tennessee Highway Patrol, said the wreck took place when a northbound 2000 Mitsubishi Montero sport-utility vehicle driven by Donna Bailey, 37, of Horton Highway, crossed the center line of the road after Bailey experienced a "medical problem" and lost control of her vehicle.

After Bailey lost control of the SUV, it veered across the center line of the two-lane highway and crashed head-on into a southbound Mazda 6 sedan driven by Susan Coffey, of Reynolds Hollow Road.

After the collision between the two vehicles, the Mazda sedan also was struck by a 2006 Mitsubishi SUV that was being driven south toward Greeneville by Misty Kite, 33, of Brown Lane.

The collision trapped the Mazda sedan driver, Coffey, inside her heavily damaged vehicle, Trooper Wise said.

Volunteers from the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad worked to free Coffey by using electric saws to cut away the vehicle's roof.

Meanwhile, Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services personnel provided emergency medical care to her and to the other two victims.

In addition, firefighters from the Baileyton-based United Volunteer Fire Department stood by as a precaution against the outbreak of fire in the damaged vehicles, which were sandwiched together.

Bailey was flown to the Johnson City Medical Center by Wings Air Rescue helicopters, Trooper Wise said.

Bailey was listed in good condition there this morning, according to a JCMC spokesman. Coffey's condition was not immediately reported.

No charges were placed in connection with the collision, Trooper Wise said.

The collision blocked both lanes of Baileyton Road and backed up traffic in both directions for about an hour.
