Hazel Greenlee Weems, 100, of the Cross Anchor community, died Saturday night at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Weems was born Sept. 22, 1909, and was a daughter of the late Elizabeth "Pet" (Tullock) and James Willis Greenlee. She was raised in the Cross Anchor community.
She was married to James Howard "Jim" Weems for 72 years. He preceded her in death Dec. 22, 2001.
Her family provided the following statement: "Mrs. Weems was the oldest lifelong member of Mount Pleasant Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Cross Anchor, where she took a very active role in the various programs of the church and attended services faithfully, as long as her health permitted.
"Mrs. Weems was a very loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a gifted seamstress, gardener, and loved to can, cook, and entertain.
"She was also a devout Christian role model for her family, friends and anyone with whom she came in contact. She had many friends, all of which continually expressed their admiration and love for 'Mrs. Hazel.'
"She had a sweet spirit that exhibited itself through her kind words, her outgoing personality, and her compassion for all that she met.
"Mrs. Weems had recently celebrated her 100th birthday and received over 100 birthday cards from friends. She enjoyed each and every one of them. Both she and the family greatly appreciated this overwhelming expression of kindness and joy."
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: J.T. and Marcella Weems and Ted and Jane Weems, all of Greene County; three daughters and sons-in-law: Mrs. Lewis (Janice) Rader Jr., Dorles and J.D. Sensabaugh, and Drucilla and Sam Miller, all of Greene County; two granddaughters and their husbands: Lana and Jeff Brown and Jana and Mark Wills, all of Greene County; six grandsons and their wives: Travis and Amanda Weems, Larry and Julie Weems, Todd Weems, and David Sensabaugh, all of Greene County, Dr. Chris and Alysia Shaver of Knoxville, and Terry and Donna Sensabaugh of Washington County; 12 great-grandchildren: Matthew Weems, Lexie Weems, Samantha Sensabaugh, Sydney Sensabaugh, Carrie Weems, Grace Weems, Hannah Brown, and Seth Brown, all of Greene County, Jonathon Shaver and Wilson Shaver, both of Knoxville, and Eric Sensabaugh and Aaron Sensabaugh, both of Washington County; a special sister-in-law: Mary Greenlee of Jonesborough; several nieces and nephews; and special friends: Roberta Gass, Evelyn White, Etta Key, Ann Shelton, Debby Swift, Angie Wampler, and the Rev. Jason Allmon.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Herman "Red" Greenlee, Rupert Greenlee, and John "Jack" Greenlee.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Jeffers Funeral & Cremation Service.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Mark Wills will officiate.
Interment will follow in Cross Anchor Cemetery.
Pallbearers include her grandsons, great-grandsons, a special nephew, Bobby Greenlee, and his son, Rocky Greenlee.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Mount Pleasant CP Church, Dr. Charles Montgomery, Dr. W. Joseph Scott, the west wing staff and nurses at Laughlin Healthcare Center, and the fourth floor staff and nurses at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
