Mary Gertrude Smith
Died: June 28, 2008
Mary Gertrude Brown Smith, 101, of Milligan Road, Afton, died Saturday at her home.
She was a daughter of the late John Hunley and Malissa Alice Marshall Brown and was the widow of Willie J. "Hoss" Smith, her husband of 56 years.
Survivors include her children and their spouses: Evelyn and Bob Cansler and Gary "Gus" and Patsy Smith, all of Chuckey, Lyle and Brenda Smith, Lynn Smith, Wanda and Kenneth Baines, and Alice and Buddy Arrington, all of Afton; her grandchildren: Bert Cansler, Janice Southerland, Darlene Johnson, Jeff Smith, and Natasha Gridley, all of Greeneville, Rebecca Hill of Unicoi County, David Cansler of Chuckey, Lisa Ramsey of Liberty Township, Ohio, Brian Smith of Afton, and Ashli Arrington of Johnson City; her great-grandchildren: Jackie Hooper, Tabitha Smith, Matthew Smith, Benjamin Gridley, and Alex Kayhill Gridley, all of Greene County, and Amber Ramsey of Ohio; her great-great-grandchildren: Jayden Hooper and Allyssa Hooper, both of Afton; several nieces and nephews; her special caregiver: Dusty Marshall; and her special friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by four brothers: Ott Brown, Robert "Bob" Brown, Paul Brown, and Merge Brown; and three sisters: Leona Dunn, Melva K. Phillips, and Ruby A. Atkins.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Kiser Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Jim Bowers, the Rev. Amos Penley, and Lyle Smith will officiate.
Interment will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Chester Atkins, J.L. Phillips, Tommy Peters, Ben Thompson, Matt Smith, and Brian Smith.
Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons and friends; Brad Peters, Ben Milligan, the staff of Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice, the staff of Laughlin Memorial Hospital, the nurses of Takoma Home Health, and the staff of Durham-Hensley Nursing Home
