Died: May 8, 2008

Jeffery Harold "Scruff" Smith, 50, of Mosheim, died Thursday.

He was a graduate of West Greene High School.

Mr. Smith was a longtime employee of SoPakCo Inc. of Greeneville.

He was a member of Brown Springs Baptist Church.

Mr. Smith was an avid drag car racer. In 2002, he won the Walley Parks Trophy for the NHRA Division Championship for the best engineered car.

In 2004, he won the NHRA Division 2 Series at Bristol Dragway, and in 2007 won the Mopar Muscle Car trophy.

Survivors include his wife: Judy Babb Smith; two sons and their wives: Chad and April Smith of Mosheim and Brad and Kelly Smith of Greeneville; his parents: Harold and Louise Smith of Mosheim; his grandchildren: Erin Smith, Ryan Smith, and Katie Smith; his mother-in-law and her husband: Ruby and bob Taylor; his father-in-law and his wife: J.C. and Agnes Babb; a sister and brother-in-law: Kathy and Kenny Holt of Mosheim; two brothers-in-law and their wives: Roger and Tammy Babb of Afton and Clay and Judy Babb of Greeneville; one sister-in-law and her husband: Evelyn and Leroy Jent of Jonesborough; six special nephews: Nathan Holt of Mosheim, John Babb, Dylan Babb, Dustin Babb, Rusty Babb, and Clayton Babb; and a special niece: Donna Barnes of Morristown.

The family will receive friend from 4-7:45 p.m. today at Rose Hill Funeral Home.

The funeral service will follow visitation at 8 o'clock in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Richard Long will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Holt, Mike Gentry, Larry Schofield, Marty Williams, Rick Wampler and Wesley Keller.

Honorary pallbearers will be his friends and coworkers of SoPakCo and his racing "buddies."

A committal service will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in Brown Springs Cemetery.
