An impressive start to the young season continues for the South Greene baseball squad.

The Rebels pulled away from intra-county rival North Greene for a 22-1 road victory on Friday. South Greene improves to 3-1 on the campaign while the Huskies drop to 1-1.

SG scored in each inning and sent 18 men to the plate in a 12-run fourth to fully ice the outcome by mercy rule.

Junior Zach Haire (1-0) went the distance for the winners, allowing just three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Haire mixed an assortment of pitches effectively against the Huskies.

"I was just trying to throw strikes and my breaking ball and change were working for me, to go with the fast ball," he said. "The defense did a great job of backing me and we're playing aggressively and with a lot of confidence as a team right now."

The opening innings were competitive, though the Rebels did pick up four runs in the top of the first to jump on top. A pair of walks to start the game off Jeff O'Neil (0-1) gave South Greene a quick opportunity with a throwing error and RBI groundouts by Kenan Wilhoit and Jackson Oster making it a 3-0 game. Scott Susong capped the frame with a solo home run to left-center field, his second of the season, to push the differential to 4-0.

North Greene scrapped back in the bottom of the inning, edging within 4-1 before leaving the bases loaded. Dalton Wright coaxed a walk and was replaced on the base paths by Drew Lady who reached on a fielder's choice. Lady advanced on a passed ball and crossed the plate on a clean base hit by Daniel Wedding. Zach Britton clubbed a double but Haire eventually left the bags full by fanning a pair of Huskies.

O'Neil worked a resilient second inning for NG, retiring the first two men before a two-out error plated a marker to put the Rebs up, 5-1.

Haire was able to further establish his command at that point, retiring six of the next seven hitters.

Four Huskies' relievers were unable to contain the SG bats as the game continued. In the third inning, Bryce Cutshaw smacked a two-run single and Jalen Shuffler tripled off the fence in straightaway center for an additional two RBIs, building the spread to 10-1.

In the fourth, Cole Baxley plated a pair with a two-bagger and Shuffler swatted his third hit of the afternoon, an RBI double. Shuffler finished just a homer away from the cycle in the game. Wilhoit also added a run-producing single during the uprising. Two Rebels jogged home on bases-loaded walks while Nick Davis and Daniel Tweed laced run-scoring pinch singles. A pair of throwing errors on sacrifice bunts also factored into the scoring.

In addition to Shuffler, Wilhoit had a three-hit day which included a pair of doubles. Shuffler crossed the plate three times and drove in three runs. Cutshaw picked up two hits and scored four times for South Greene.

For North Greene, Britton's double was the only extra-base hit. Wedding and Willie Schlotman had the other two base hits.

South Greene returns to play on Monday at home to Claiborne in a Blue Ridge Conference game. North Greene is home to Hancock County Monday.
