Greeneville's Lady Devils hoped to lock up at least a share of the Blue Ridge Athletic Conference title on Tuesday night, but they're going to have to wait.
South Greene came storming from behind with a strong second half to avenge an earlier loss to Greeneville this season, riding a near perfect effort from the foul line to a 57-45 home win that puts them back in the hunt for the league crown.
Greeneville's boys knocked South Greene out of first place in the conference standings, hitting a strong 64.7 percent from the field to pull away for to a 59-44 win.
The Lady Devils still lead the conference with only one loss at 9-1 and two games to play at home Friday to Grainger and on the road Saturday at Cumberland Gap.
The Lady Rebs are 7-2 with a home date against Claiborne on Friday, a road trip to Chuckey-Doak (5-2) on Saturday and then home against the Knights on Feb. 12 still on the schedule.
South Greene's boys are now 7-2, falling out of the top spot for the first time all season. The Devils are 5-5 in the conference, looking to remain in the top half of the standings with the conference tournament now on the horizon.
LADY REBS RALLY
Trailing off and on for most of the first half, South Greene stormed back with a big third quarter and was perfect at the foul line in the fourth to take the win.
The Lady Rebels were nearly perfect from the line for the entire game, shooting a blistering 22-of-26 (87 percent).
It was missed shots, and missed opportunities for shots in the third quarter that did in the Lady Devils.
Greeneville (18-6 overall) didn't have any problems finding the basket in the first half. After South Greene (16-5) started off with an early lead, a 3-pointer by Morgan Shipley sparked an 8-0 run to put the Lady Devils out front.
The rest of the quarter went back and forth with the Lady Rebs nipping just ahead 11-10 on a pull up jumper by Maelyn Cutshaw just before the horn sounded.
Greeneville took over in the second. Another 3-pointer by Shipley got the spurt going for the Lady Devils, but it was from up close where Greeneville did the most damage.
With South Greene's Shelby Hicks on the bench in foul trouble, the Lady Rebels had no answer for Rainey Story in the paint.
Story scored nine to lead the Lady Devils to a 26-23 halftime lead.
Hicks returned to the floor in the third and took over. Brandi Crum started the rally with a pair of 3-pointers for South Greene. The Lady Rebels took the lead at 32-30 when the 6-foot-1 Hicks stole the ball on Greeneville's perimeter and drove the length of the floor for an uncontested layup.
From then on, Greeneville was playing catch up. That was made difficult by South Greene's defense. Story was the only Lady Devil with a basket in the third quarter, scoring six of Greeneville's seven points in the quarter. The Lady Rebs led 40-33 heading into the fourth.
Greeneville continued to struggle shooting in the fourth. The Lady Devils didn't make a basket for the first five minutes of the period.
South Greene sealed the win at the line in the fourth, hitting 10-of-10 free throws. Rechelle Dye went 6-for-6.
Dye led the lady Rebels with 17 points. Crum had 12 points with three 3-pointers and a team-best 11 rebounds. Hicks blocked four shots and had two steals.
Story led the Lady Devils and the game in scoring with 20. She also had a game-leading 14 rebounds. Brianna Kelley scored 10.
